ABOUT HELEN

My training, 25 years as a stained-glass conservator, self-employment & creativity in glass, teaching heritage craft skills

My background

Training

After graduating from my first degree in 3D Design: Glass in 1994, I started the beginning of my working life at Norgrove Stained Glass Studios in Worcestershire. Over the following six years I learnt and honed my stained-glass craft skills there, and developed a great appreciation for the quality hand-made glass we used.  I was also encouraged to apply for the SPAB William Morris Travelling Craft Fellowship during this period, achieved in 2001. This introduced me to the broader world of historic buildings conservation, and has been an ever-present support throughout my career.

Stained Glass Conservation

I worked for the next fifteen years as a stained-glass conservator, painter, and glazier, both on-site removing and fitting, and in the studio.

I continued to learn and hone the practical techniques of this absorbing medieval craft, and have experience in various workshops throughout the UK. This includes two years at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, where I was specifically charged with conserving and preparing panels for the Sacred Silver & Stained-Glass Galleries as part of the museum’s Future Plan, the Medieval & Renaissance Galleries and the Glory of Gothic exhibition.

I spent a further twelve years working in the cathedral environment, repairing the stained glass at York Minster.

Eight of these years were heavily involved in all aspects of the conservation of the Great East Window, made by John Thornton between 1405 & 1408.

Alongside the practical work I was heavily involved with the general public, hosting some of the thrice weekly tours.

Digital Design Skills

2016 heralded a change of direction as I accepted the position of Conservation, Documentation, Research, & Media Coordinator for HolyWell Glass, a stained-glass conservation company in Wells, Somerset. My role focused on digital documentation of all processes involved in each stained-glass project, using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and In-Design, as well as overhauling the outdated website, developing social media platforms, historical research, and writing conservation reports and articles.

Teaching

I have always been very craft focused, and alongside my full time work I began to teach stained glass at evening classes and full day workshops, for Pennie Lordan at York Arts and Crafts. I was also the designer and project manager for an eight-year volunteer project to create a 35m long mosaic pathway for the driveway at Clifton Parish Church, York, from 2008-2016.

Currently I teach Stained Glass, and Painting on Glass, for Yorkshire based ‘Wolds Heritage Workshops’ from 2022 to the present day.

Self Employment

I became self-employed in 2021, which opened up many and varied opportunities to incorporate my own creativity.

I work to commission, offering a unique and bespoke service.

I also produce high-quality ‘off-the-peg’ products.

I will be showcasing my work for the first time, at the York Open Studios in April 2025.

Two complimentary medium will be on display at this event; traditional stained glass, and polymer clay creations.

Both highlight my love of colour, pattern, and processes. The kaleidoscope effect of rose windows and complex tracery patterns from medieval cathedral construction, forms the basic structure of my designs.

YORK OPEN STUDIOS 2026

I am very proud to be able to showcase my work for the second time, at the York Open Studios, in April 2026.
