How do you charge for commissions?
I quote per individual project.
Do you sell your work already framed?
My off-the-peg work is usually framed. Framing a piece of work gives a professional finish. From a health & safety perspective it also negates the need to handle the lead came, which forms the structure of the stained-glass panels. I can, however, provide work un-framed if requested.
Where are you based?
My workshop is situated in central York, Yorkshire, UK.
What words define your creative style?
Bright, colourful, complex patterns, happy, fun, inspiring, personality, movement, vibrant, unique, uplifting, encouraging, elegant, decorative arts, craftsmanship.
What message are you wanting to put out through your work?
I want to engage more and more people with stained glass, and be part of the renaissance in vernacular, secular, and ecclesiastical stained-glass; to help raise an awareness and appreciation for its usage and employment in modern architecture and decorative schemes.
Happy, healthy societies are surrounded by beauty and colour, that inspire feelings of joy and awe. ‘Awe’ is described as “A feeling of reverential respect mixed with wonder or fear” in the Oxford English Dictionary. We can promote awe more wildly in society, through public art and architecture. An environment full of beautiful art and architecture is key to making people proud, positive, inspired, and gives confidence to achieve more.
LET’S BUILD BEAUTIFUL! Expand horizons, add innovative new materials in your project. Look to a positive future using a tried and tested centuries old traditional craft technique!
What are your core values?
Using creativity to enhance quality of life. Producing fully hand-made products, and using quality materials. Passing on and promoting an ancient craft tradition, and helping to save an endangered craft. A deep understanding and respect for the craft, and its historical context.
What is your inspiration?
The ethics of the Arts & Crafts movement; to make beautiful, handmade, often functional products, including one-off, bespoke pieces. The incredible skills of the medieval stained-glass craftsmen and the styles of the period. Having worked in such close proximity with medieval glass for many years I feel a strong connection with the medieval stained-glass craftsmen.
I am inspired by natural forms, pattern, colour, and texture. I am an SPAB Fellow, and share the values of the Society, including its deep respect for all historic building materials.
My work journey from a career in stained glass conservation, back to my own creativity, where I began as a young art student, has greatly informed my thinking. I have a love of flowers; learning through drawing and designing. Nature is therapy. I also have a great love of stained glass as a practical process and ancient craft – an important antidote in a technical age that is moving away from working with tools/hands.
Who is your ideal customer, and who is your work aimed at/suitable for?
Both individuals or businesses in the UK & Yorkshire. This includes, interior designers, architects, garden designers, home owners, fine artists/installations, gallery owners, public art commissioners, country houses, shop owners, hotel owners, historic buildings professionals.
What sets you apart from competitors?
I have a large skill-set, honed through working throughout the UK in a wide selection of workshops over 25 years. I am academically trained to Masters level, and have a good network of professional contacts. Competitively priced. I can work to a brief, and to deadlines. I provide/offer guidance throughout the project, explaining the techniques/processes and practicalities involved in connection with associated trades. I am problem solver, with good communication skills, and professional integrity.
How would you describe your business approach?
Proactive, can-do attitude, a problem solver,
Professional, experienced, intelligent,
Attention to detail,
Good communicator,
Helpful, enthusiastic.

THERE IS A RISING TIDE OF INTEREST IN CRAFT WORK, AND TRADITIONAL CRAFTED STAINED-GLASS CAN GREATLY ENHANCE YOUR ENVIRONMENT.
Stained-glass is both beautiful and functional. It is THE supreme colour art-form, facilitated by a craft. Stained glass can provide many qualities to an interior space: –
Decoration, narrative, identity, family & local history, family status, a dedication to a family member, atmosphere, nature, storey-telling, control of the light, beauty, a celebration of the home, a unique statement, bespoke, high quality, robust and durable, colour, depth, beauty, transparency, painted detail, traditional techniques, modern applications, abstract designs, bold statement, or subtle presence, warmth, richness, interest, texture.
What I can do for your space: –
Stained-glass panels would work well in internal openings as well as external locations – bathrooms, porches, stairwells, corridors, room dividers/screens
It is preferable to have natural light behind it, to get the full impact, although it can also be fitted into a dedicated wall frame and be back-lit with artificial light
Very simple designs can have a big/powerful impact
Quality handmade glass gives a unique quality of light to a room
Products crafted by Stained Glass Design & Craft are handmade, bespoke, locally made, and sustainable
The design and dimensions of stained-glass for your home/interior or outdoor space can be tailored to your pocket.
I can design and make the entire project, or I can make to your own design. I can adapt existing artwork to a stained-glass format, so that it is both strong and functional, as well as beautiful. I can adapt any existing or salvaged panels you may have, and incorporate them into a new panel or series of panels. I can repair any broken or damaged glass panels.
If required, stained-glass designed for an external opening can be protected from the elements in a triple glazed unit.
A beautiful environment can create a joyous world!
